[KSL]  It wasn’t his dog’s bark or bite that had a Brigham City man concerned, it was his aim. A man was recovering Wednesday after being shot over the weekend by his dog. A 46-year-old Brigham City man and a friend were duck hunting Sunday about 8:30 a.m. on the north end of the Great Salt Lake near the bird refuge, about 10 miles west of Brigham City. The two had their canoe-like boat in a shallow marsh area when the man got out of the boat to either set up or collect decoys. He laid his 12-gauge shotgun across the bow of the boat, said Box Elder County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Kevin Potter. After the man got out of the boat, a dog inside the vessel jumped up on the bow and stepped on the gun. The gun fired and shot the man in the buttocks. Medical crews later removed 27 pellets of birdshot. “(The dog) did something to make the gun discharge,” Potter said. “I don’t know if the safety device was on. It’s not impossible the dog could have taken it off safety.” The men called 911 and walked to the main road to wait for emergency crews. The fact the man was wearing waders likely helped prevent a more serious injury, Potter said. The gun was fired from approximately 10 feet away, he said. Potter did not have information on the type of dog that stepped on the shotgun. Even though the two were duck hunting near a bird refuge, Potter said it was legal.

Sucks, right man?  Getting shot in the butt cheek for no fucking reason when you least expect it?  I’m gonna venture to guess those ducks feel the same way.  So kudos to this dog for busting a cap off on behalf of the animal kingdom.  I’m no PETA freak, just stating the facts.  If you want to go hunt, then go hunt. I’ll eat the shit out of some venison.   (more…)

[NBC]  A man hunting with his grandson accidentally killed a U.S. Marine due to return to duty this week, after mistaking him for a bear in the Oregon wilderness, authorities said. Christopher Ochoa, 20, of French Camp, Calif., died at the scene in western Oregon Friday night. He had been hiking with a friend through a field and was wearing dark clothes, according to The Associated Press. The pair were headed to Silver Creek Falls Park. Gene Collier, who was hunting bear with his 12-year-old grandson saw movement in the brush and fired one shot from a .270-caliber rifle, striking Ochoa, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said. His pal was able to summon authorities and direct them to the scene. Although deputies administered first aid to Ochoa, who was alive when they arrived, he died at the scene. Collier, 67, hasn’t been charged and authorities said the shooting appeared to be accidental. Still, the case was handed over to the local district attorney’s office. A press release from the sheriff’s office said Collier cooperated fully with authorities, and there was no indication that he was impaired by drugs or alcohol. Ochoa’s family in California told police he and Raymond Westrom, 53, of Lathrop, Calif., were in Salem, Oregon, to do work on a house. Ochoa was set to report back for duty on Oct. 25.

It’s like I’ve said a thousand times by now, it’s just not a good idea to hunt for bears. Sometimes they eat you, sometimes they electrocute you and sometimes you accidentally shoot and kill a 20 year old U.S. Marine about to head back to the desert to fight for your second amendment rights to accidentally shoot someone. This is exactly why I never fucked around in the woods during hunting season when I was a kid, and I loved playing in the woods. Tree forts, bmx jumps, man hunt, boobie traps, sneaking off to drink beer I swiped from family parties. You name it. But once I saw people start roaming around with orange vests and Elmer Fudd hats, (more…)

[Helena IR]  A hunter attacked by a wounded grizzly in a Montana forest was killed not by the bear, but by a gunshot fired by a companion trying to save him, authorities said Friday. Lincoln County Sheriff Roby Bowe said an autopsy determined 39-year-old Steve Stevenson of Winnemucca, Nev., died of a single gunshot to the chest. The cause of death was determined by a medical examiner with the Montana State Crime Lab. The shot was fired by 20-year-old Ty Bell, also of Winnemucca, as he attempted to stop the bear’s attack. No charges are expected, Bowe said. The autopsy found bite marks on Stevenson’s leg caused by the bear. “We’re fairly convinced it was obviously an accident,” Bowe said. Bell and Stevenson were on a black bear hunting trip with two other people in a thickly forested region along the Montana-Idaho border when the attack occurred Sept. 16. The foursome had split into two-member teams, and early in the day Bell shot and wounded what he thought was a black bear, which are considered less aggressive than grizzly bears. Bell and Stevenson waited about 15 minutes until they thought the bear had died, then tracked the 400-pound grizzly into thick cover, according to Stevenson’s mother, Janet Price. When the bear turned on the men, Stevenson yelled at the animal to distract it and keep it from attacking Bell, Price told The Associated Press last week. When the animal instead went after Stevenson, Bell fired multiple shots trying to kill the animal, Bowe said. The bear also died. “Anytime you follow a wounded animal, but particularly a predator like a bear, you have to be very careful,” he said.

Hahahahaha.  Idiots.  No, I don’t hunt and no, I’m not one of those PETA freaks.  But it just seems like common sense to me that, if you’re gonna go out hunting a bear, you might lose.  Isn’t that part of the thrill?  If not, you might as well just use dynamite or maybe an aircraft assault with a couple of scuds into the forest.  I honestly don’t know why this is news.   (more…)

[Anorak] THE Phnom Penh Post has news of the man who at his friend’s dog after it was killed by a monkey has been shot dead by the dog’s owner. In Vietnam:

A 25-YEAR-OLD man who ate his hunting partner’s dog after it was killed in a monkey attack was shot dead by the canine’s owner with a crossbow last Tuesday. Police said the suspect and the victim were friends who were hunting together in Kratie’s Snuol district. It is understood the suspect shot his friend because he would not help save his dog from being killed in a monkey attack. The victim then took the dead dog home to eat. When the suspect saw this, he fired his crossbow at his friend killing him instantly. Police say the suspect confessed to the crime following his arrest.

The monkey has not been caught…

What in the… what? I had to read that first sentence twice just to make sure I was following the story correctly. Might be the best sentence ever written. What a chain of events here, huh? I mean, all three of those events could probably be it’s own post: Monkey attack, friend eats dog, guy kills friend with a crossbow. All legit stories. But we’re lucky enough to get them all bundled together. I’m sure this happened over the course of hours or days, but in my head it’s like (more…)
